LOTS of children for Adventures in God's World, our Vacation Bible School at Highbanks Park. The theme is "Water All Around the World." Our Bible story the first day was about Abraham and Hagar and their son, Ishmael (Genesis 21).
At the end of the day when the children asked what they learned, one young child piped up and said, "We learned about Abraham...LINCOLN!" It was very sweet. I, of course, had not given a last name of this Biblical Abraham (he doesn't have one).
During the Civil War the freed slaves saw a connection and called Lincoln "Father Abraham." That child reminded me of how all of us--whatever our age--do our best to connect the Biblical stories to our history and what we already know.
