The wooden statue in my office window was hand-carved at a monastery in New Mexico.
What do you see? At the monastery it was one representation of the crucifix–of Jesus on the cross. But the artist also made it in such a way to spur our imaginations.
You see, it looks like Jesus is holding out his hands, blessing us. Presbyterian author Anne Lamott has said that one of the most important prayers is, "Help me! Help me! Help me!" The carving reminds me that Jesus says to us, "I am with you, to help you through."
Lamott says that–in her experience–the other most important prayer is saying, "Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!" when we have made it through.
