Healing
By now, we are all aware of the shooting rampage in Tucson, Arizona on January the 8th that hospitalized Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, wounded several others, and killed a number of individuals. Since then, the story has been heavily covered by news media across the country. And last night, that coverage remained front and center as President Obama addressed a large crowd at the University of Arizona in an effort to bring healing to that region.
I was at the gym while the President was speaking, and for that reason, I only saw part of his speech in closed captioning. But, I do remember that, in a nod to Christians and Jews alike, Obama referenced the book of Job as an example of the suffering of innocent people. It was a clear reminder of God’s role in the healing process.
Surprisingly, Congresswoman Giffords survived a point blank gunshot wound to the head. Today, reports are that she can now move her limbs and focus her eyes. Of course, none of us can know what is in her future. But, it is clear that her life will never be the same again. Moreover, I imagine that her surgical team has little hope for a full recovery. From every angle, this is a terrible and senseless tragedy. Much healing is needed.
It is often said that healing takes time, and that is partially true. However, to engage in the healing process is to acknowledge that things will never return to the way that they were before. Before abuse. Before desertion. Before tragedy. In times like these, the only way to truly move forward is to chart a new course, and to celebrate the milestones of every kind along the way.
