Stewardship

September 2009

Greetings,

God’s Hand is Open; We are Renewed. Psalms 103-104

With these words the Session kicks off our 2010 Stewardship Campaign this fall. In October you will be receiving all the important materials from the Stewardship Committee you will need to make the important decision about how to support this ministry with your time, talent and treasure next year.

As I think about this theme, I think of all the activity that goes on in this place. Our congregational ministry programs, including our second-to-none preschool, are extensive. Along with all of our church activities, we also house, at no charge, the office for the Montana de Luz mission in Honduras. We provide space for a very large AA group, for young violin students, for community children’s music programs, for recovery and support groups of many kinds as well as other community organizations that need space. We are a blood donor site, we offer flu shots, and we are an election polling location. In short, we are a strong community presence. I even found out this year that we are one of the oldest members of the Worthington Chamber of Commerce! God’s hand has been opened to us and we extend that open hand to others.

I also think about the very large numbers of members and friends of WPC who put in an incredible number of hours volunteering to make life better for God’s people within our church walls and far outside of them. I think of all the community, national and global missions in which we are engaged. Of how we reduced our campus ministry budget last year and yet through the good commitment of staff and membership we are seeking ways to expand our reach. Of all the time from their busy schedules adults take to teach our youngest the ways of Christ and to visit those among us who are on the closing end of their life journey. It is true that by reason of the Holy Spirit, the best things are free. God’s hand is open; we are renewed to make our presence known to the world and to one another.

And finally, we do put our money where our mouth is, as Christ himself bid us. It is incredible to see how faithful you have been in this period of recession. Where some have hit difficult economic times and had to scale back, others have stepped up, and we continue to fulfill Christ’s calling and purposes. That’s simply the way God works. What we ask for in terms of your financial commitment for 2010 is the same faithfulness as you have shown in the past. We believe that when we choose the way of faithfulness, God shows us what’s next. For indeed,

God’s Hand is Open and We are Renewed!

In Christ,
Dr. Jeffrey DeYoe
