As promised, here is the prayer I shared at the end of my sermon on January 10th, the day we blessed the men and women who are taking up leadership roles for our church as deacons and ruling elders. The prayer is known to many as the “Holden Village Prayer,” a reference to a Lutheran retreat and conference based in an abandoned mining town in the mountains of Washington state.
O God, you have called your servants to ventures
of which we cannot see the ending,
by paths yet untrodden,
through perils unknown.
Give us faith to go out with good courage,
not knowing where we go,
but only that your hand is leading us
and your love supporting us
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
I hope you find this prayer as encouraging and as inspiring as I do!
“With good courage,”
